Report 17 - Week beginning 27/04/09

Have you stuck to the training programme? If not any reasons why?

No. I prioritised two quality sessions both of which were 3 miles. I'm suffering from a 'cold' that's going around and before you ask, no it's not 'Swine Flu'. I pushed the speed a bit in my last session so that was pleasing.

Have you done more or less than expected? Explain.

I'm working to my programme now.

How did you feel during training this week? What were the highs and lows?

Training went well. Got a bit of a 'cold' so my breathing is slightly hampered. I ran my final session in Perth around the Inch's Park. It was a beautiful evening, the sun was shinning and I got sun burnt also. My knee injury is improving each week so quietly confident it will 'hold out' on the day of the race.

Are you seeing improvements; in speed, distance, breathing?

Happy with my speed as it is at a level that I feel comfortable to complete the race in. Breathing slightly hampered by my 'cold' but I remain optimistic and focused that I will be ready for the race.

Where are you walking/running; gym, beach, roads, forests?

One session was around Achvarasdal Woods and the other at North Inch Park, Perth.

Are you training alone/with someone else/mixture? How does this affect your training?

I ran both sessions with my wife Sophie (aka coach). I can think of better way of catching some 'quality time' with Sophie, but needs must! I have been very fortunate to have for the most part, someone to run with during my training programme. It certainly helps in 'keeping you going' but, in my opinion, you still have to want to get out there first and do it for yourself.

Any injuries?

Although my knee is improving, I'm keeping a close eye on it.

Are you feeling any benefits away from training as a result of the training; health, toning up, more energetic?

What can I say, I've lost weight, my fitness has improved and my energy levels have increased. What more could you ask for in only 4 months!!

Are you doing any other forms of exercise; swimming, cycling, yoga, pilates?

Just some short walks this week.

Any other observations?

As time is nearly upon us for race day, on quick reflection, would I go through this again? Simple answer, yes without hesitation. I have risen to another challenge and feel all the better for at least giving it a go! Life's full of regrets and all that. Thanks to everyone for their support, from family and friends to complete strangers who had read the 'articles' in the local paper and just wanted to wish me 'all the best'. It talks volumes for a 'caring society'! Thanks to the organising committee...you have created something unique here, so well done. Last but by no means least, Sophie and the girls, for really being there for me during the good and the not so good..there was no bad!
