Introduction

My name is Ewan Mackenzie, I am aged 43 and I am a Director of W&A Geddes Ltd in Wick. I am married to Sandra and have 3 children Scott (20), Ashley (18) and Chloe (14) with the eldest pair studying at Edinburgh and Heriot Watt University respectively. Sandra is a keen runner and participates in local running groups and competed in last years Mey 10k.

My main sport is golf which I play at Thurso and I am also actively involved on the Committee at the club. At the peak of my golfing career I managed to play off 3 handicap but nowadays I am managing to play off 6 - just! I also play Squash in the Thurso Squash Leagues and hover around Leagues 6 & 7 with minimal signs of real improvement due to lack of fitness and slowness of moving my current bulk of 112kg around the court!!

My running experience to date is precisely zero. So why start running now? I have always admired people who can run any distance and have attended a few events in which my wife took part in, and I always said to myself someday I will do that - well here goes, hopefully this is the someday. I attended the Mey 10k last year and was really impressed by the event. I read last years featured runners article with great interest and was well impressed with their achievements. By putting my neck on the block and being one of this years featured runners is probably the only way I am going to have any chance of making it!

The other main reason for giving the running a go is to try and improve my general fitness which hopefully should help me to lose some weight and if you believe all you read should make me healthier.

My goal is to manage to complete the run as well as try and enjoy the whole experience. Being someone who is competitive I would love to do it in less than an hour but right now that seems really ambitious.
