Report 2 - Week beginning 11/01/10
What have I done this week.....?
Well, it started badly. The weather was really cold, the pavements were treacherous due to ice and it was dark, dismal and not really conductive to wanting to go out and run after work. So on Monday evening I returned to the torture class (Body Conditioning) at my local gym. I did make the effort to jog the mile and back to the gym though...... so there's an improvement! The class was OK but again I was stiff and sore for two days afterwards but I think I found the press ups and triceps dips a little easier or maybe I was just a little more determined.
I ran on Tuesday with Portia. It was OK but slippery in patches! We just ran at an easy pace and were out for about 45 minutes covering 5 miles around the city centre.
On Wednesday my knee was pretty sore. I felt it was a muscular thing not a joint or tendon and I think it was from the Monday night class. It was sore to touch but by Thursday the pain had gone so it probably was just lactic acid but I've decided to be more careful about what I do on a Monday night! Wednesday night is usually our 'club night' but I didn't go this week due to the sore knee and the fact that it was really, really cold and snowing again. I alternated ice and heat on my sore knee, ate chocolate and watched 'The Tudors' Season 2 'that Jonathan Rhys-Meyor is pretty hot! Much better than running.......
Thursday evening and the temperature had climbed a little out of the sub-zero range so I went out after work and did 6.5 miles. This route includes a mile long climb at one stage and I found it a little tough. My knee was complaining on the downhill - but it was alright and I felt quite pleased with myself for having made the effort to go out. I still find running in the city at night on my own a little daunting ' there are some really dodgy characters in Derby!
I usually spend every other weekend away from Derby. I either go to Blackpool to stay at my daughters or Mums, go to North Wales to stay at my Dads or just go and stay somewhere like Chester or York. I always take my running kit and especially enjoy North Wales as my Dad lives right on the North Wales Long Distance Footpath which goes over the mountains. I love going up there to run. This weekend was a Blackpool one so on Saturday I was up early to try a bit of speed work on the beach with my daughter. I generally sprint between every other breakwater and try to jump over the breakwaters which is fun. You never know if there is a big pool of water on the other side! We did 3 miles on the beach between Cleveleys and Rossall and about 2 miles of easy running.
Sunday is 'long run' day so Laura and I headed out to run along the river from Fleetwood to Skipool and back. It's about 11 miles and 80% of it is off road on 'The Wyre Way' another long distance footpath. It's a lovely run ' lots of birdlife along the river and we actually felt that spring was coming at last!
