Report 5 - Week beginning 01/02/10

It's not been a bad week this week - I've run four times and done 27 miles. I need to up my mileage because I'm doing the English Kilomathon on March 16th. This is a new event - there will be a Scottish Kilomathon, a Welsh one and an English one. It is 16.2 miles and is being run between Nottingham and Derby. The English one is being billed as a training run for the London Marathon as anyone doing that should be doing a 16 mile run on that weekend as part of their training. I'm not doing London but as the event is in my area I thought I'd enter and there are a lot of our Club members doing it so it should be a good day out. I have been trying to run long on Sundays but over the past few weeks have struggled to run over 9 or 10 miles, not because I can't - simply because I didn't feel like it!

So on Sunday this week I got up early and set out to do 12 miles. I did about 11.5 and was happy enough with that. It took me 1 hr 34 mins and although I dipped a bit at about 8.5 miles I sped up for the final 2 and a half miles. The weather was not the best - it was very foggy and chilly. Although I was warm enough running it was clammy and uncomfortable. Next week I will try to do 13 miles or so on Sunday.

Apart from that I ran 5 miles with Portia on Monday evening. This was slow and a recovery run for me after the cross country the previous Saturday. I did a faster 6 miles on Wednesday at the club and on Saturday I did 4.5 miles. I ran with my nephew Peter because he is wanting to join the Royal Navy and has to do a fitness test in a couple of weeks time. He needs to be able to run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes. I ran 2 miles with him then carried on for a further 2.5 on my own. Peter is not a runner but I have no doubt he will achieve his goal as he is so determined. It has been taking him about 15 minutes to do 1.5 miles but when he ran with me it took him 13 minutes 15 secs. He has no idea of pace so after a half mile warm up I got him to run a mile in 8 minutes so he knew what it felt like then did a half mile warm down.

Another week done... I know I'm going to have to start some serious speed work soon. I'm not looking forward to it! Still, it can wait until after the Kilomathon.....
